Welcome to Juan Santamaría International Airport!
Juan Santamaría International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría) is the main gateway to Costa Rica’s vibrant capital, San José. Located in Alajuela Province, just 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) northwest of downtown San José, this bustling airport welcomes millions of passengers each year.
Named in honor of Costa Rica’s national hero, Juan Santamaría, a brave drummer boy who gave his life in 1856 defending the country, the airport stands as a symbol of pride and history. It’s not only the biggest and busiest airport in Costa Rica but also ranks second in Central America in terms of passenger traffic.
The airport is a hub for several airlines, including Avianca Costa Rica, Costa Rica Green Airways, Sansa Airlines, and Volaris Costa Rica. It’s also a key focus city for Avianca El Salvador and Copa Airlines. While Juan Santamaría was Costa Rica’s sole international airport for many years, it now shares the spotlight with the international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste.
With direct flights to North and Central America, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean, Juan Santamaría International Airport connects travelers to destinations all over the world. In 2022, it welcomed around 5 million passengers, showcasing its importance in the region.
Whether you’re starting your Costa Rican adventure or heading home, Juan Santamaría International Airport is here to make your journey smooth and enjoyable.
